The Help: Movie and Memory
I didn’t intend to see The Help. David Denby’s review in The New Yorker changed my mind. Apparently the film put the black maids front and center, and the acting was terrific. I didn’t grow up in the south, nor with black servants. But I have my own story, about life with our Argentine cook, Elisa. Memory is fiction; fiction can be truth. Much of my memory comes from my parents’ conversations about Elisa, conversations infused with affection and condescension.

I’ve found another hero – Richard Simmons. Because of him, I have exercise in my life again, and I love it.

But more than that, with the complexities of raising Amanda, the writer I had struggled to create after retirement was expiring. She needed time and attention. Like Tinkerbell, she needed to hear me say, “I believe in you.”
